2013 Philo Festival of Media Arts Winners!

The Central States Region Alliance for Community Media (CSACM) honored the winners of the Annual Philo Festival of Media Arts hosted by Public Media Network at the Epics Center in Kalamazoo, MI on Saturday, October 5, 2013. Categories ranged from government meeting, interview/talk show, original short film and much more. Each category offers profesional, non-professional and student winners.

CSACM Chair, Elizabeth Lord said, “This year’s regional winners showcased wonderful community partnerships and excellence in local media. Congratulations to all winners and finalists on their awards, for building community media and continuing to educate others. ” This year’s excellence awards were presented to:

Michigan Chapter Alliance for Community Media Recognizes the 2013 NATOA Government Programming Award Winners

Four Michigan Community Access Centers Win 10 National Awards.

The National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) honored the winners of the 28th Annual Government Programming Awards (GPA) at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel in Orlando, FL on Thursday, September 19, 2013. Four of the Michigan Government (PEG) Access Stations received a total of 10 awards. Meridian Township won first, second and third place as well as honorable mention, City of Livonia won first and third place and honorable mention, City of Ann Arbor won two honorable mentions and Bloomfield Township won second place. Categories ranged from election coverage, live sports events, to use of social media.

Michigan Chapter President, Ron Beacom states, “Providing our communities with local coverage is what we do best, but winning national awards is icing on the cake! Congratulations to all the national award winners, but mostly our local Michigan stations.” Below are the Michigan winners from first place to honorable mention with categories listed.

Our schedule for the day is starting to come together:

Acclaimed film maker Alphonso “Zo” Wesson will be the exciting keynote speaker for lunch. He has been an active member of the Cincinnati community and has directed music videos for R&B musicians Kiesha Cole and Kat Williams as well as directing episodes of MTV’s Real World Chicago.

Cincinnati ABC Director of Public Affairs Mona Morrow will be on hand giving some tips on making that demo reel a real impressive piece of work. She will give you the tips and advice to make a serious impression

Melissa Godoy is nearly famous within the Midwest for independent films that get to the heart of our society. Her 2009 film”The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant” chronicled the heartbreak and anquish an entire town felt when GM was forced to shut down their plant in Ohio during the 2009 bankruptcy.

Peter John Ross is a local Cincinnati film maker featured in the October 2012 issue of Videomaker magazine. His independent film Horrors of War has reached international publication and he has lots of insight to share with festival attendees.
